Nursing Implications

Nursing Practice

Encouraging and listening to patient stories is a therapy in its own right, alongside other activities that enable self-expression and healing. Story is an essential element of evidence guiding nursing practice. By coming to know a person “through a story”, the nurse can identify what is most important and develop goals that the person is likely to embrace, which may result in better health outcomes. It is in the hope that practicing nurses can use the story inquiry process to access story evidence for the precious contribution it can make to nursing knowledge. Each nurse at the bedside, in the clinic, or in the office is uniquely positioned to gather and analyze practice stories to guide current practice and frame inquiry. It is proposed as a framework for structuring story-gathering and analysis. Guidance for nursing practice in the wisdom of people living health challenges.
